Historicallythe genus was poorly characterised leading to many fossilcycads that resembled Becklesia being placed in other genera includingCycadites and Paracycas. We describe here a new species,B. maulnyi sp. nov., from an exceptional and almost completecycad specimen housed for two hundred years in the collections ofthe Musée Vert of Le Mans. The specimen comprises the apex ofa stem bearing petiolate and pinnate leaves with thin and widelyseparated leaflets, which possess two prominent abaxial stomatalgrooves that are characteristic of the genus Becklesia. We reassignthree other French cycad fossils previously described underdifferent generic names to Becklesia.
