The Variscan Belt of Western Europe 1
Résumé
This chapter deals with the metamorphic and structural aspects of the principal events responsible for the early architecture of the French Variscan belt, before the tectono-metamorphic events coeval with its late- and post-orogenic dismantling. The Variscan metamorphic units are mainly located in the “Moldanubian” domain of the belt, corresponding to the North Gondwana margin, represented in France by the Southern Armorica, the whole of the Massif Central, the Central and Southern Vosges. Metamorphic rocks were also found in the Leon block, which is part of the Saxothuringian domain. In addition, metamorphic units are represented in the eastern branch of the belt. Finally, because of the high intensity of Alpine deformations and metamorphisms, as well as the various displacement senses that have occurred since the Permian, the place of the eastern branch of the French Variscan belt in the European Variscan puzzle remains speculative.
