ROXI: a compact vertically-pointing X-band system for microphysics studies of ice and liquid precipitation.

Résumé

ROXI is a compact, vertically pointing multi-purpose X-band radar designed and built at LATMOS. Its solid-state transmitter is limited to 70 W peak power but proper design allowed us to reach a -20 dBZ sensitivity at 1 km. The reflectivity Z, the Doppler velocity VDop and the velocity spectra are stored to be further exploited. The radar is built around FPGA microchip which offers an excellent versatility in terms of configuration. The radar is used mostly to study ice and liquid microphysical properties of precipitation. ROXI was deployed in various field campaigns representing different types of meteorological situations: Swiss Alps, Paris semi urban and urban area and Corsica. It is often used in conjunction with the W-band FMCW radar BASTA which provides an interesting combination of data in Rayleigh and Mie scattering regime, allowing us to get into deeper discrimination of the particles type and the PSD/DSD properties. In order to exploit these datasets, a number of unsupervised classification methods were tested. First, a simple yet robust k-means technique was applied to Z and VDop. Second a Self-Organizing Map technique was also applied (Kohonen). Comparison of results from both methods will be presented to assess the robustness of the classifications. Attempts at labelling the classes based on simulations of the measurements will also be proposed. These classification will be made for the different systems observed during the different field campaigns representing different type of rain regime.
