Thermal sounding of Martian atmosphere in ACS-TIRVIM experiment onboard TGO: an overview of observaions and main results

Franck Montmessin

Résumé

The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), a mission by ESA and Roscosmos, started its operational scientific phase in March 2018. The Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) is a set of three spectrometers (NIR, MIR, and TIRVIM) designed to observe the Martian atmosphere in solar occultation, nadir and limb geometry. The thermal infrared channel — TIRVIM is a Fourier-transform spectrometer capable of operating in nadir and occultation mode in the spectral range of 1.7-17 μm with the best spectral resolution 0.13 cm−1. We present an overview of observations and main results obtained in nadir mode over a complete operation period of TIRVIM instrument. Thermal structure from the surface to 60 km, dust and ice column opacity were monitored during almost one Martian year, from LS = 143∘ of MY 34 (March 2018) to LS =115∘ of MY 35 (December 2019). The TGO orbit and ACS observation strategy are especially favorable, which respect to previous similar experiments (TES/MGS, PFS/MarsExpress, MCS/MRO), to study diurnal variations of the temperature field with dense local time coverage. Two dust storms occurred in 2018-2019 were the events of particular interest. The work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project No. 20-42-09035).
