Ten years since the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami - Progress in paleotsunami research

Abstract

The Year 2021 is 10 years since the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami (Tohoku-oki tsunami). This was the first time that such a large tsunami had occurred at a place where advanced paleotsunami research had been ongoing since the early 1990's and where the risk of such an event had been highlighted by geologists (Goto et al., 2021). This anniversary therefore represents an important time for Earth scientists to remind the world about the risk of such low frequency, but large tsunamis. This special issue aims to not only review the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami, but also the progress that has been made in paleotsunami research since the event both in Japan and around the world.
